before we get to howard, we have a lengthy list of closings and delays. >> the delays we have in anne arundel, frederick county, montgomery county, howard county, prince george's county, maryland two-hour delay. in virginia we have alexanderia arlington county, fairfax county, loudoun county, two- hour delay. our friends in west virginia, berkley, grant, jefferson and mineral all on two-hour delays. >> those are just added recently. the closure list right now we'll keep updating it but right now three in maryland. calvert, charles and st. mary's county, maryland all closed. here's the long list in virginia. these are all closed. king george's, stafford county, culpeper, frederick all closed. fauquier county, city of winchester, prince william county all closed. clark county, orange county, page county, rapahannock county all closed in virginia. federal government optional, telework. we're updating on wusa9.com so you can look there, too. >> monika will have traffic complications. it may be better since fewer

people will be out early for schools. >> hov lanes are closed on 95. i'll have details on that. >> not good. >> howard, when will it end? >> next couple of hours. doesn't look like a bad day. it's the timing that hampered a lot of things. i think by mid-morning most of the roads due to the crews will be out, the sun will be out and it's a dry, fluffy snow, we should be in good shape. we want to show you some video kevin king shot earlier this morning in the tenley town area, wisconsin avenue. this is what i'm talking about. you see how it's nice and wet there because d.c. road crews had been out spreading salt. you saw those areas that were treated were wet. those areas that hadn't been treated easily got snow covered because of how cold it's been the last few days. we've seen totals from one inch to even 4, 5 inches in southern maland. let's show you the day plan other this thursday morning. temperatures will climb into the upper 20s by noon as we clear out pretty quickly over the next few hours. 29 by 4:00. high today 30, 31 but with the winds once again, it will feel
6:02 am
like it's only in the low 20s. here's a photo out of germantown, maryland this morning. i like what he did with the light flair there. had about an inch, inch half of snow up there this morning. the hey stuff has really been south of town where some of the areas in st. mary's county, calvert have had in the 3, 4, locally 5-inch categories with a lot of fluffy powder. you can see how this is starting to break up. let's go to monika with the latest timesaver traffic. you teased us with 95. on the northbound side of i- 95, the latest information is that the hov lanes are closed basically between dumfries and quantico. that whole stretch of i-95 northbound because of the weather conditions, they're not allowing you to use the hov lanes right now down on 95. take a look at the map behind me on the southbound side of i- 270. this was an accident that happened i would say about 45 minutes ago at route 109. look at that solid backup southbound 270 from i-70 in
6:03 am
frederick all the way down to hyattstown before that pace improves. let's take a look at the conditions outside right now if you're planning to head over on 270 further south. already quite a bit of volume off and on as you come down from germantown to falls road. all of the lanes are open here. over to the other side in virginia now on the northbound side of i-395. there had been an accident. we can go to our vdot camera for that. there had been an accident on the northbound side of 395 here at duke street. that's going to cause delays. another accident northbound 95 in dale city as well. so lots to deal with this morning. give yourself the extra time. you will need it. back to you guys. >> thank you, monika. we want to remind you there are school closings and delays. you can find out which school districts are affected by going to our website at wusa9.com. also as we just told you, the federal government is open, but you do have the option for unscheduled leave or unscheduled telework. the roads are pretty slick in some places, especially south and east and south and

west of d.c. wusa9 reporter delia goncalves is live in suitland which is in prince george's county. again, they or a two-hour delay at this point. let's check on the conditions now. hello. look at that. good morning, delia. >> reporter: hey, mike. good morning, andrea. the snow is falling here in suitland. i'm in my car because the biggest challenge that you will face likely this morning is driving on these snowy side streets. many ever the main roads we've been running into, those look good but the side streets still lots of snow. so this is where you're going to find a lot of problems. the snow is really light at this point. light and fluffy snow but it's really causing a lot of trouble on the side streets. it can be very, very slick. stopping is a problem. so either drive in a low gear or just very slowly. also another word of advice, brush off the snow off your car. the snow is so light i can literally brush it off with my
6:05 am
hand. aaa said a lot of the hazards on the road are caused by drivers who don't brush off the snow creating some hazards for the drivers behind them. and that causes some visibility issues of course. so you have to take care of that as well. make sure you have good tread on your tires. i know monika just had a great little spot segment with someone talking about tires. make sure you have good tread and they're properly inflated. that will help you on the road today. but certainly take it slope. that's the advice. even if you have a big suv like this, aaa says many of these snow-related accidents are caused by folks who are either super timid or overly confident in the snow. they say a lot of these overly confident drivers unfortunately are driving these big suvs and think they can just plow right through. but do yourselves a favor. do everyone a favor, please drive slowly when you're heading to work this morning. lots of delays and take some extra time before you head out
6:06 am
because it will be a slow commute this morning. back to you, mike, andrea. >> good advice, delia. of course, they're four-wheel drive but it doesn't mean they're four-wheel stop. >> a lot of drivers think that. >> delia reporting live from prince george's county, maryland where schools or a two- hour delay. also today california senator dianne feinstein will browse a bill to reinstate a federal assault weapons ban. it sets the stage for what promises to be a rang rouse debate -- ran kerr rouse debate. benghazi. clinton was accused of not doing enough to provide protection and misleading the public in the aftermath of the four americans being killed there. the secretary responded to say she is focused on what she needs to do to try to fix what happened and what went wrong. we'll have much more on clinton's testimony when we're joined later by "u.s.a. today"'s white house correspondent. that will be at 645 this morning. -- 6:45 this morning. should be a friendlier ex change between congress and secretary clinton's replacement. massachusetts john kerry will go before the senate foreign relations committee in the first step to become the next secretary of state. to prepare for his new role, the senator will have to sell off many of his personal investments forth to avoid possible conflicts of interest. kerry is the senate's wealthiest member with an estimated net worth of more than $184 million. jessica doyle is back with

another your money report. >> talking super bowl. >> that's right. the countdown to the super bowl is o. i don't know if you have your plans set. maybe money is a little tight right now. maybe you want that new big screen tv but it's just out of your price range. how about giving your current tv a pre-game tuneup. it's a lot easier than you may think. >> reporter: some of the most diehard football fans will watch the big game on a brand new tv, but if that's not in your budget, consume every reports says -- consumer reports says there are simple steps to get any tv ready. >> a lot of people may have brought a tv home and didn't set it up or left it with the factory settings. in most instances, that's not going to give you the best picture quality. >> reporter: review the menu of preset picture modes. >> a lot of times it may be set to a vivid mode which will be overly bright or an echo mode which will make the tv look dim. the first thing you can do is use one of the presets that will give it a more natural looking picture.
6:09 am
typically this is either the movie or a custom mode or normal mode. >> reporter: for further adjustments, set black and white settings before color and tint. colors should look vivid and realistic without a glowing effect. flush tones should look natural. for sharpness, resist the urge to set it too high. edges can create an unnatural effect. and if you find you've overadjusted, simply hit your tv's reset button to go back to factory settings. >> always good that you can take that mull began. if you want to treat yourself to a new tv, there are big deals out there. consumer reports says the prices are significantly lower than they were this time last year. i was doing some hunting. i found deals such as $500 off a 60-inch high deftv at best buy and $1,000 off an 8 on-inch hdtv at h.h. gregg. sign me up. >> i'm 72 inches tall. an 80-inch tv -- >>it's bigger than you.
6:10 am
>> that is huge. >> it's huge. >> we didn't realize that you could make your tv better. i never thought of the factory settings and adjusting. >> now you know. >> now we know. >> that's what we do here. >> there are so many choices. having some guidance on that helps. >> it's your own eye. just trust your eye. do the black and white first. then play with everything else. then you'll get a picture that maybe you like even better. >> you just have to figure out which button to press when everybody else changes to cable for video games or whatever. >> i know. it gives me a headache too. >> thanks, jess. creativity with the cold. think super soakers, frozen eggs and wet t-shirts. >> oh, no. >> a lot of fun when we come back.

to be the case as you travel in this morning. so keep that in mind. let's go over to our maps. we have a couple of really big issues. one southbound on 270 right here at route 109, an earlier accident caused this delay coming in from frederick, it's solid as you head down to 109 in hyattstown before that pace improves. over on 95 northbound, the hov lanes were closed for some time. they have been reopened. there are accidents in dumfries. look at all the slow traffic trying to get into triangle. we'll take a live look outside on the northbound side of i-395 near edsall road where traffic is going to be slow up to duke street where there was an accident on the shoulder. and a quick look live just to give you some perspective of the beltway north of town. this is what you should expect in silver spring on the outer loop leaving the 95 interchange. more news, weather and traffic when you return. when you return. you're watc

this is always the place to get your weather first. this is a live look at the white house. a little snow on the rooftop at the white house there. it is 20 degrees. it's dropped a degree since we first went on the air. cold, crisp morning. depending upon where you live, i'll have more problems than some of the rest of us. thank you for starting your thursday with us. i'm andrea roane. i'm mike hydeck. here is howard bernstein live on the weather terrace. we have a long list of delays and closings. we'll be reading those coming up. great hat, howard. >> i got this years ago. you have to have a dark hat with the brim. the snow is very light now. it's just coming down. really not going to accumulate a whole lot much more here in the metro where we've had a half-inch to inch. south of town, three, four, locally five inches. we'll get rid of the snow in the next hour, hour and a half. we'll turn partly sunny and
6:31 am
breezy. a high 31 degrees. we've had some decent snow totals out here. the weather computer doesn't want to be moving. temperatures right now are in the mid- to upper teens to around 20 degrees of the the snow is a little bit of light snow still in the metro and also down in southern maryland. but the bulk of the accumulating snow is now pulling away. so areas south again like st. mary's county, 3, 4, locally 5 inches of snow. a lot more problems in the south than the metro. take it easy this morning. let's go to monika with timesaver traffic. i was just on the phone with the folks over at the bay bridge. we've been dealing with a two- car accident right on the bridge span westbound on route 50 with only the right lane getting by right now. then they need to treat the road once they get the cars out of there. it's going to take some time. you've got about a two and a half-mile delay on the westbound side of route 50 right now heading for the bay bridge. there's also an accident right here vista road at route 704. if you're planning to head
6:32 am
inside the beltway in virginia, 66, 395, 295 over in the district heading for the 11th street bridge, slow to the westbound freeway. an earlier incident there was cleared. one last look outside. if you're planning to head northbound on 95, this has really taken a hit this morning. coming up from dumfries, up to springfield. there were several accidents and also hov lanes were closed for a time there. now reopened. back to you. >> thanks, monika. see you in just a little bit. time to see what our partners up north are doing at cbs this morning. >> charlie rose is in new york to tell us what's happening this morning. good morning, charlie. >> hey, good morning, mike and andrea. ahead a helium shortage, that's right helium, that could impact much more than the balloon business. so we'll go underground at the federal helium reserve. plus underground in west virginia. we'll meet the american chefs who hope a nuclear bunker will make them the best in the word.
6:33 am
the news is back in the morning. see you at 7:00. >> interesting show. we're looking forward to that. thank you, charlie. we do have a long list of closings and delays related to the area. two-hour delays and closings. >> these are the delays in maryland. anne arundel, frederick county, montgomery county, howard county, prince george's county. these schools or a hour two- -hour delay. also on a two-hour delay in virginia, alexandria, arlington, fairfax county and loudoun county, virginia. and in west virginia, these schools berkley, grant, jefferson and mineral county are also on a two-hour delay. >> for any reason you didn't hear your name, go to wusa9.com. the complete list is there. here's the list of closures. so far three in maryland. calvert county, charles county, saint county, maryland all closed. the following list in virginia is all closed. king george county, virginia closed. stafford county, virginia closed. culpeper county, frederick county, fauquier county, city of winchester, virginia, all those closed. prince william county, virginia
6:34 am
closed. clark county, oarng county, page county, rapahannock county, virginia all those are closed. the federal government is open with the option of telework. >> timing as howard said is everything. of course this morning snow is creating a slick commute for some of us. delia goncalves is in suitland in prince george's county to give us some guidance on navigating through this light snow but slick snow. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, andrea. i'm back in the car here in suitland because last half-hour i was talking about driving on these snowy side streets. that's going to be the biggest challenge today for a lot of you folks heading out this morning. a lot of the main roads look good. side roads can be kind of tough going. so what do you do if our find yourself skidding? because a lot of these side roads have snow on them are very slippery. aaa advises if you find your car skidding, take your foot off the gas and brake and then slowly steer into that skid in
6:35 am
that direction. when you gain control of your car, then you can redirect your car and continue on your way. let's take a look at the conditions out here in suitland. we're right off pennsylvania avenue right before silver hill road. say that five times, right? it's been snowing consistently for about an hour. we had a short break earlier this morning but now the snow has been falling for a bit adding another coating to the side streets. but we've been seeing plows and they've been doing a good job treating the main roads. here on pennsylvania avenue, you can see the morning commute well under way. lots of cars are traveling and really going at a good rate of speed. but listen, even though you're seeing pavement and it's only wet on the main road, word of advice this morning is just to take it slow because there are still some slick spots out there. so it could be deceiving and we all know here in the washington metro area, it doesn't take too
6:36 am
much snow to really cause a big problem. so lots of plows have been doing their job but they are relying on you, drivers who will be heading out to work to do your job as well. so head out of the house a little early and give yourself some time and of course i know mike, andrea, you were talking about even if you have a four- wheel drive, your car doesn't stop instantly, especially in conditions like this. so folks should definitely keep that in mind when they're heading out this morning. back to you. >> delia goncalves reporting live from suitland, maryland. it is now 6:36. jessica is back. she has another your money report. >> she says a lot of ups and downs are possible today on wall street. >> that's right. it could be a potentially really great but really busy day. the dow start this morning at fresh five-year highs. stocks rose after the house pass add bill extending the u.s. debt limit. we had strong earnings from i.b.m. and google announced for today. shares of netflix have surged 30% before the bell on an unexpected profit. plus, there's a ton of economic data on the docket.
6:37 am
i told you it was busy. so we're going to check the numbers. the dow starts at 13,779 after climbing 67 points in trade yesterday. the nasdaq was better by 10 and the s&p 500 was up by 2 points. but this could cause problems today. shares of apple are down by more than 8% right now before the bell. the company reported earnings which were on target, but this was the first time in years that apple didn't post a double digit earnings increase and sales missed the mark. apple shipped 47.8 million ipads in the first quarter, a million less than some analysts were expecting. concerns about demand for its new iphone 5 and ipad tablets drag the stocks from highs of more than $700 a share back in september to under $470 this morning. and this is a stock that has a lot of pull. it makes up 10% of the nasdaq and 3.86% of the s&p 5 hup.

we don't have the video for you but where the streets weren't treated -- there's a shot of outside. we have wisconsin avenue. things are moving fiernl. the main streets that are treated, you can barely see that we've got any snow now. it's just very, very fine. it's just about over and traffic is moving well. let's show you the day planner for this thursday morning. we're going to get rid of the snow very soon. maybe the next hour most will be gone. 27 by 11:00. 30 by 3:00 but a breezy day again with the gusts toward 20 miles an hour. so the wind chills will make it feel like it's in the low 20s, staying very chilly once again. our system from last night, fast move clipper. they don't have a lot of moisture. it was so cold, some of the snow ratios will be the 20, 30 to 1 range. starting to break up some. still light snow and flurries leftover that will be coming through over the next one, maybe two hours. then it will be out of here. even starting to break up to the south. bushwood, hollywood four to
